Kindred Spirit Thread

Writers whose work has deep roots in their lives, who spin up universes to occupy with characters who grow important to them, thrash out their questions through story -- or otherwise share swaths of overlap with the evolution of the Okal Rel Universe will feature, here, as available, on the JOURNEY category of the blog.

It's hard to recognize the Okal Rel Universe in the barbie doll world I called "the game", played primarily with my best friend from elementary school through most of my high school years, Kathy Perrault (posing with me against my brother's Volkswagen beetle in the 1970s).

The "living vampire" with the blue hair wig that I sewed myself using thread for hair (despite nearly failing sewing in grade 8 as a subject involving the creation of a striped dress) never made it into the Okal Rel Universe, but the idea he was from an alien species rather than supernatural is consistent. There are characters in the Okal Rel Saga who believe in the supernatural but nothing compels a rationalist humanist character like Ranar to share that belief even if the effects of Reality Skimming can induce altered states of mind.

Actual Reetion medical science features in the upper righthand image, and even a chamber used for medical purposes that is a bit freaky to Gelacks, who were the ill-rationalized bad guys at this stage, represented by a GI Joe doll when they made an appearance. All the good guys were Reetion.

And most evident of all, child and teenage Lynda (known as Jane to her family) loved nothing so much as make believe so far into her high school years the barbie thing morphed into role-playing and then, by first year university, onto paper with a new friend met at an event for honours students in sciences at the University of Victoria.
