As much of our fiction is about people, understanding the politics of the world your characters are living in can be critical in ensuring the world is real enough to such your reader in. Can you have a hereditary monarch in a supposedly enlightened science fiction age? Possibly, but your readers will require you to work hard to reasonably bring it about.
